Our terms of service
Believe.in is a social platform akin to other popular social networks, where you can create a charitable profile, log and aggregate your philanthropic activity and socialise this through those popular social channels that you’ve connected to your Believe.in account. Believe.in and The Believe.in Trust also process your donations and redeem any available Gift Aid on behalf of participating charities in the most charity friendly manner. Unlike other platforms, Believe.in takes no cut from what you give whatsoever. This means that after credit card fees, Believe.in is one of the only platforms to not take a cut from your charitable goodwill and passes 100% of your donation directly to the charity along with 100% of any Gift Aid that can be reclaimed. Gift Aid adds an additional 25% on top of your donation amount at no extra cost to you. There are no Gift Aid processing costs, no Believe.in service charges or administration fees.
Further, we believe in the proliferation of world-class technology to charities large and small and in making the basics available at no cost. We actively work to put better digital products and services in the hands of small charities, because we believe that if employed correctly, technology can help charities grow awareness and change the world.
As such, we neither charge charities a single penny to get setup on and use Believe.in to connect with and grow a supporter base, nor do we charge any other per annum, or service fees. Charities can use Believe.in to accept donations (one-off donations, recurring donations and donations through fundraisers) absolutely free of charge.
For donations, we are working to revolutionise how charities accept donations online and how these are processed. Participating, active charities on Believe.in will receive funds instantly – a hugely important innovation that we’re proud to have delivered first. For those charities not yet active on Believe.in, or without a merchant account, your donations go to The Believe.in Trust, Believe.in’s charity, who work to process, then distribute your donation and any claimed Gift Aid to the respective charity as quickly as possible.
Please note that we are a small team and work to process your donations as quickly as possible. In the rare event that you might seek a refund, we ask that you please get in touch with the charity directly.
When you create a Believe.in profile or submit content to any other part of the Believe.in site, please remember that Believe.in is a publicly accessible platform and designed for everyone. If offensive, obscene or racist content is shared, posted, or linked to, we will remove it and terminate your membership. Further, we are not responsible for any copyright-protected content submissions to Believe.in and ask that you ensure you own, or have the express permission to share the content you submit.
MadeByBelieve Limited, whose registered office is at 14 Dufferin Street, London, EC1Y 8PD (registration no. 07642050) trading as Believe.in ("Believe.in"), operates http://believe.in (the "Website"), The Believe.in Trust and its associated products and services.
These are the general Terms of Service, which govern your use of the Website and its associated services. Please read these Terms of Service carefully. If you do not wish to be bound by these Terms of Service, you should not continue to use or access the Website or its associated services.
These Terms of Service may change or be updated from time to time. It remains your responsibility to access and check these Terms of Service wherever you access the Website. The latest version of these Terms of Service will govern any future usage by you of the Website and its associated services.
Our approach to data
We receive a number of different types of information about you, including:
Your information is the information that's required when you sign up for the site, as well as the information you choose to share.
When you sign up for Believe.in, you are required to provide your name and email address, unless you connect with Facebook in which case you agree to provide such information as is available through Facebook and which you have opted to share with 3rd party platforms.
Information you choose to share
Your information also includes the information you choose to share on Believe.in, such as when you post an action, upload a photo, or comment on a friend's action. It also includes the information you choose to share when you take an action, such as when you start supporting a friend, donate to a charity or a fundraiser, believe in a charity, install an app, find friends using social network contact finders, or provide additional information within those fields found under the 'Settings' tab under your profile.
Your name, profile pictures, networks, username and User ID are treated just like information you choose to make public. This information and the information you choose to share allows us to do things like show you appropriate content and charity adverts.
Information others share about you.
We receive information about you from your friends and others, such as when they support you, donate to your fundraisers, invite you to donate, share your profile, post a photo of you, or add you to a fundraiser. When people use Believe.in, they may store and share information about you and others that they have, such as when they save a list of donors to the fundraiser they have hosted.
Other information we receive about you
We also receive other types of information about you:
We receive data about you whenever you interact with Believe.in, such as when you look at another person's profile, send or receive a message, search for a friend or a Page, click on, view or otherwise interact with things, use a Believe.in mobile app, or make other purchases through Believe.in.
When you post things like photos or videos on Believe.in, we may receive additional related data (or metadata), such as the time, date, and place you took the photo or video. We receive data from the computer, mobile phone or other device you use to access Believe.in, including when multiple users log in from the same device. This may include your IP address and other information about things like your internet service, location, the type (including identifiers) of browser you use, or the pages you visit. For example, we may get your GPS or other location information so we can tell you if there are charities near you, or charity events.
We receive data whenever you visit a site with a Believe.in feature (such as a social plugin, or an app), sometimes through cookies. This may include the date and time you visit the site; the web address, or URL, you're on; technical information about the IP address, browser and the operating system you use; and, if you are logged in to Believe.in, your User ID.
We also put together data from the information we already have about you and your friends. For example, we may put together data about you to determine which friends we should suggest you start supporting, or which charities you'd like. We may put together your current city with GPS and other location information we have about you to, for example, tell you and your friends about events nearby, or offer opportunities to you that you might be interested in.
When we get your GPS location, we put it together with other location information we have about you (like your current city). But we only keep it until it is no longer useful to provide you services, like keeping your last GPS coordinates to send you relevant notifications. We only provide data to charities if you have expressly opted in to share this information with them, or after we have removed your name or any other personally identifying information from it, or have combined it with other people's data in a way that it is no longer associated with you.
When we use the phrase "public information" (which we sometimes refer to as "Everyone information"), we mean the information you choose to make public, as well as information that is always publicly available.
Information you choose to make public
Choosing to make your information public is exactly what it sounds like: anyone, including people off of Believe.in, will be able to see it.
Choosing to make your information public also means that this information:
can be associated with you (i.e., your name, profile pictures, background photo, User ID, username, etc.) even off Believe.in;
can show up when someone does a search on Believe.in or on a public search engine;
will be accessible to the Believe.in applications you and your friends use; and will be accessible to anyone who uses our APIs such as our app API.
Sometimes you will not be able to select an audience when you post something (like when you start a fundraiser and this is featured on a charity's page). This is because some types of actions are always public actions. As a general rule, you should assume that if you do not see a sharing icon, the information will be publicly available. When others share information about you, they can also choose to make it public.
Information that is always publicly available
The types of information listed below are always publicly available, and are treated just like information you decided to make public.
This helps your friends and family find you. If you are uncomfortable sharing your real name, you can always delete your account.
Profile Pictures and Background Images
These help your friends and family recognise you. If you are uncomfortable making these photos public, you can always delete them.
This helps you see whom you support and will be sharing information with. If you are uncomfortable existing within a network, you can either increase your privacy settings, or delete your account.
Username and User ID
These allow you to give out a custom link to your profile and helps make Believe.in Platform possible.
Usernames and User IDs
A Username (or Believe.in URL) is a custom link to your profile that you can give out to people or post on external websites. Usernames appear in the URL. We also use your User ID to identify your Believe.in account. If someone has your Username or User ID, they can use it to access information about you through the Believe.in website. For example, if someone has your Username, they can type Believe.in/me/Username into their browser and see your public information as well as anything else you've let them see. Similarly, someone with your Username or User ID can access information about you through our APIs, such as our Graph API.
How we use the information we receive
We use the information we receive about you in connection with the services and features we provide to you and other users like your friends, our partners, the charities that purchase ads on the site, and the developers that build apps and websites you use. For example, we may use the information we receive about you:
as part of our efforts to keep Believe.in products, services and integrations safe and secure;
to protect Believe.in's or others' rights or property;
to provide you with location features and services, like telling you and your friends when something is going on nearby;
to measure or understand the effectiveness of ads you and others see, including to deliver relevant ads to you;
to make suggestions to you and other users on Believe.in, such as: suggesting that your friend use social platforms to find friends; and for internal operations, including troubleshooting, data analysis, testing, research and service improvement.
Granting us this permission not only allows us to offer you a Believe.in experience today, but it also allows us to provide you with innovative features and services we develop in the future that use the information we receive about you in new ways.
While you are allowing us to use the information we receive about you, you always own all of your information. Your trust is important to us, which is why we don't share information we receive about you with others unless we have:
received your permission;
given you notice, such as by telling you about it in this policy; or
removed your name or any other personally identifying information from it.
Of course, for information others share about you, they control how it is shared.
We store data for as long as it is necessary to provide products and services to you and others, including those described above. Typically, information associated with your account will be kept until your account is deleted. For certain categories of data, we may also tell you about specific data retention practices.
Deleting your account
If you want to stop using your account, you can delete it. When you delete an account, it is permanently deleted from Believe.in. It typically takes about one month to delete an account, but some information may remain in backup copies and logs for up to 90 days. You should only delete your account if you are sure you never want to reactivate it.
Accessing and changing your information
You can access and correct most of your personal data stored by Believe.in by logging into your account and going under your 'Settings' tab.
About the charities and organisations featured on the Website
The Website and its associated services allows you to donate to, and raise funds for, any of the charities and organisations listed on this Website with whom Believe.in have an established giving relationship, or who are represented by The Believe.in Trust. Every member charity or organisation featured with donation privileges either has a contractual agreement with Believe.in authorising Believe.in to collect donations and reclaim Gift Aid on the charity’s behalf under the UK government's Gift Aid scheme, or can be donated to via Believe.in’s charity, The Believe.in Trust, who work to re-grant donations to the charity of choice. Charities on Believe.in are included at Believe.in's discretion. As a common standard, charities on Believe.in must be registered with the Charity Commission for Believe.in to consider indexing and presenting them to users. Believe.in also features reputable not-for-profit organisations, which are not eligible for Gift Aid reclaim. Charities can have similar names: it is your responsibility to check that you are donating to the organisation you intended.
Charities that do not have an established giving relationship with Believe.in will be supported by The Believe.in Trust, who will accept donations first, before then working to distribute donations to them as quickly as possible. This means that when you give to a charity who isn’t yet participating in Believe.in’s charity programme, you are donating to The Believe.in Trust, who then pass donations to the charity in question once they have activated their charity’s account and validated their banking information. Though The Believe.in Trust’s coverage supports upwards of 10,000 charities, we are always working to extend this coverage and our terms will change to reflect this should any new processes be required that differ from those listed herein.
Where participating charities are active on Believe.in and have a merchant account enabled, one-off and recurring donations are processed instantly via Believe.in and its processing partner. As a consequence, Believe.in does not handle refunds and relies on its processing partner to complete and process transactions securely. Where a charity has not associated a merchant account with their Believe.in profile, donations are made to the The Believe.in Trust, Believe.in’s charity, who then subsequently work to pass donations on quickly. For The Believe.in Trust to pass donations on to a non-participating charity, charities must first activate their Believe.in profile, provide valid banking instructions and activate the Believe.in donation system.
We ask that should you require a refund that you request this from the charity directly.
Use of your donation
Believe.in is not responsible for any dissatisfaction you may have regarding the recipient organisation's use of any donation you may make through the Website or its associated services or websites powered by us. Please note that the recipient organisation reserves the right to use your donation for its general purposes. Believe.in cannot guarantee that funds will be earmarked for a particular appeal, unless specifically stated by the recipient organisation itself.
Believe.in charges no fees whatsoever. There are no subscription fees, no sign-up, or per-annum fees - or any other cost imposed on charities by Believe.in. Donations are subject to a fixed credit card processing fee imposed by our payment processing partners. We’ve gone through great lengths to find a credit card processor who is as committed to transparency and simplicity as Believe.in and work with Stripe to offer credit card processing at a fixed 2.4% + 20p. No matter where you give from, or which card you use, you’ll always only experience a one fixed credit card processing fee.
Unauthorised card use
When a donation is made through our processing partner via Believe.in the transaction is final and not disputable unless unauthorised use of your payment card is proved. If you become aware of fraudulent use of your card, or if it is lost or stolen, you must notify your card provider in accordance with its reporting rules.
Protecting your password
When you register with Believe.in and choose a password to protect your secure account, you are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password. If you become aware of any unauthorised use of your password, we recommend that you change your password immediately under your profile's 'Settings' tab.
Gift Aid information
When you donate to a participating charity on the Website or its associated services and confirm that you are a UK taxpayer in accordance with the requirements of the Gift Aid scheme as they apply from time to time, The Believe.in Trust works to reclaim Gift Aid on behalf of the receiving charity. Believe.in are not an accounting, taxation or financial advisor, and you should not rely on information given on the Website or its associated services to determine the accounting, tax or financial consequences of making a donation to charity. We strongly recommend that you consult your own adviser(s) about any accounting, taxation or financial consequences that may affect you.
As a user you must not:
misrepresent your identity or affiliation with any other person or organisation;
use the website to send junk email or 'spam' to people who do not wish to receive email from you;
use the Website to conduct, display or forward surveys, raffles, lotteries, contests, pyramid schemes or chain letters;
interfere with, or disrupt, the service or services or networks connected to the service and introduce any computer virus (including any variant or similar malicious code or instructions) to the Believe.in systems;
provide a donor with any gift, prize or any other form of incentive in connection with the making of any donation by the donor.
Believe.in reserves the right to cancel your account and delete any page without notice in the event of a breach of the above rules. Building a Believe.in page in aid of a charity in no way implies Believe.in's, or the charity's endorsement of your fundraising activity. Many charities disapprove of, and do not wish to be involved in dangerous sports or unusual challenges. It is your responsibility to check with the charity first that your chosen activity does not contravene the charity's policies. Believe.in reserves the right, at its absolute discretion and without notice, to cancel your personal fundraising page at the request of the charity, in the event that the charity, in its absolute discretion, deems your fundraising activity inappropriate or unnecessarily dangerous.
We give anonymised information to the people and companies that help us provide, understand and improve the services we offer. For example, we may use outside vendors to help host our website, serve photos and videos, process payments, analyse data, measure the effectiveness of ads, or provide search results. In some cases we provide the service jointly with another company, such as with our donation partners to successfully process these. In all of these cases our partners must agree to only use your information consistent with the agreement we enter into with them as stated herein.
Security and bugs
We do our best to keep your information secure and try to keep Believe.in up, bug-free and safe, but can't make guarantees about any part of our services or products.
Change of Control
If the ownership of our business changes, we may transfer your information to the new owner so they can continue to operate the service. But they will still have to honour the commitments we have made as stated herein.
Believe.in and its associated services contain links to the websites of charities and other organisations. Inclusion of a link to another website does not imply endorsement of its content or opinions. Your relationship and any transactions with other organisations through their websites or otherwise are your own responsibility.
The name Believe.in and its logo and any other product and service names that we may present on the Website or its associated services from time to time may not be used in connection with any product or service that is not Believe.in's, nor in any manner that is likely to cause confusion, or in any way that may disparage or discredit Believe.in. Other trademarks, service marks or logos that appear on the Website or its associated services, in particular (but not exclusively) those of member charities, are the property of their respective owners and are likely to be registered trademarks and subject to restrictions as to their use. They must not be used without the express permission of both Believe.in and the trade mark owner.
All content on the Website and its associated services is owned by Believe.in, our charities, or other original providers, and is protected by the applicable intellectual property and proprietary rights and laws. You may copy content for your own personal, non-commercial use provided you do not alter it or remove any copyright, trademark or other proprietary notice. No other use of the Website's and its associated services' content is permitted without the express prior permission of Believe.in, and, where applicable, the copyright holder.
Changes to the service
Believe.in will make every effort to ensure that the Website and other services are available continuously, but reserves the right to modify, suspend or discontinue all or any part at any time with or without notice. Unless specifically exempted, any new features, services or software applications introduced shall be subject to these Terms of Service.

You may discontinue use of the Website and associated services at any time. These Terms of Service will continue to apply to past use by you.
Disclaimer and Limitation of Liability
Believe.in does not, and nothing in these Terms of Service shall act to, exclude or limit Believe.in's liability for death or personal injury resulting from its negligence, fraud or any other liability which may not by applicable law be excluded or limited. You agree that your use of the Website and its associated services is on an "as is" and "as available" basis and that your use of the Website and its associated services is at your sole risk. Believe.in does not guarantee continuous uninterrupted or secure access to our services and operation of the Website may be interfered with by numerous factors outside of our control. On that basis, except as expressly set out in these Terms of Service, Believe.in does not provide conditions, warranties or other terms in relation to the Website or its associated services, to the extent permissible by law. Believe.in shall undertake general maintenance and upkeep of the Website between 03:00 - 07:00 hours at the weekends from time to time.
